Throughout the year, Miami has many professional and collegiate sports teams to root for. When you’re in Miami, there will be plenty to watch in the world of sports.

The Miami Heat (basketball), the Miami Marlins (baseball) , and the Miami Dolphins (football)comprise the city’s main sports trifecta. Miami’s major sports teams have all won championships, and some of the most popular athletes have played for these hometown teams.

Baseball – Florida Marlins

The Best Player in Florida Marlins History?

  • Miguel Cabrera – Cabrera hit a walk-off home run during his first game with the Marlins and then erupted onto the national scene in Game 4 of the 2003 World Series when Roger Clemens of the New York Yankees demolished him with a fastball up by Cabrera’s chin. Cabrera answered with a two-run home run off Clemens. He was an All-Star for the next four seasons until being traded to Detroit because the Marlins could no longer afford him. He still leads the team in batting average (.313) and intentional walks (70).

The Marlins have the honor of winning the World Series in both seasons in which they met the criteria for the postseason, in 1997 and 2003, as the National League wild card team.

Marlins Park is their home park. Despite being one of only two MLB franchises to never win a division title (the other being the Colorado Rockies), the Marlins have managed to win two World Series titles as a wild card team.

Basketball – Miami HEAT

Miami Heat, an American professional basketball team based in Miami that competes in the National Basketball Association’s Eastern Conference (NBA). The Miami Heat have three NBA titles (2006, 2012, and 2013). The Heat joined the league as an expansion team in 1988, along with the Charlotte Hornets.

The Heat have had empires in the making for the past 15 years, with Glen Rice and Rony Seikaly being the first leaders, Alonzo Mourning as well as Tim Hardaway taking over shortly after, Dwyane Wade and Shaquille O’Neal emerging a few seasons later, and Wade now working in conjunction with LeBron James and Chris Bosh.

Miami Heat play at AAA arena

In addition to being the home of the Miami Heat, Bayfront Park and the AAA arena itself host a variety of concerts and events. The AAA arena is a short walk of to Bayside, an open air shopping and entertainment center where you can catch a bite to eat, a beverage, listen to live music, travel the bay area on a boat, or simply take in the stunning city views.

Florida Panthers play at  BB&T Center

Attend a Panthers hockey game at the BB&T Center in Sunrise, FL, and be ready to freeze. During the hockey season, there is seldom if ever an empty seat in the stadium, and Panthers games are a full two hours of entertainment. There’s much to eat inside the stadium, as well as numerous chances to appear on the jumbotron. A Panthers game is an excellent way to commemorate a weekday birthday or reconnect with old friends.

Soccer – Miami FC

Sports Venues in Miami

American Airlines Arena

This arena on Biscayne Bay in downtown Miami is used for Miami HEAT Basketball home games and many other concerts and events. It was built to replace the Miami Arena and it opened for the first time on December 31, 1999. The first event held there was a Gloria Estefan concert. Note that Gloria is the owner of the “Bongos” Cuban restaurant located inside the stadium.

Dolphins Stadium

This sports stadium in Opa-Locka Florida is use for football, baseball, soccer, and lacrosse. It is most well-known as the venue for the home games of the Miami Dolphins NBA American football team and the Florida Marlins MLB baseball team Before it was called Dolphin Stadium it was known at different times as Joe Robbie Stadium, Pro Player Park, and Pro Player Stadium.

BankAtlantic Center

This indoor stadium is located in Sunrise Florida, a suburban town north of Miami and west of Fort Lauderdale. It was built in 1998 and it is used as a venue for ice hockey, basketball, boxing, wrestling, concerts, and other events. It is the venue for the home pages of the Florida Panthers NHL ice hockey team.

Tropical Park Stadium

This 7000 seat stadium is the venue for the home games of the Miami FC professional soccer team and it is also used for track and field, equestrian, tennis, rugby, American football, and boxing events. The stadium was built in 1979 on the site of a former horse racing track. In addition to being a venue for spectator sports the park has sports facilities, paved bicycle trails and a fishing lake that are open to the public.

Miami Professional Sports Teams

For better or worse, the Miami market area now has teams in all four major leagues. However, aside from the Dolphins, Heat, Marlins, and Panthers, several other professional sports teams have called Miami home. In fact, the Magic City’s colorful pro sports history predates the establishment of the Dolphins by decades. That list includes the Ethiopian Clowns (basketball’s equivalent of the Harlem Globetrotters) and a minor-league basketball team comprised of recovering addicts.
